Ten 10-Minute Organizing Tasks

Got ten minutes?

Here are ten organizing tasks you can do in ten minutes or less:

•  Clean out your medicine cabinet. Get rid of old makeup, expired medicines and toiletries you haven’t used in months.

• Weed out 10 file folders. Invest just one minute or less per file folder. Get rid of anything outdated or no longer useful.

• Clear off a surface. Whether the surface is a table, a dresser, a desk or countertop, remove any clutter so you can actually see the surface again. File any papers that need filing, return any stray items to their rightful homes and toss the junk.  Once you’ve cleared the clutter, you can organize the items that belong there.

• Delete, delete, delete. For the next 10 minutes, delete as many messages as you can from your email inbox. This includes forwarded jokes, unsolicited messages and email you can simply read and chuck.

• Organize a drawer. Whether it’s your junk drawer, a drawer in your bedroom dresser or a desk drawer, spend 10 minutes emptying out the junk, and arranging it so that similar items are stored together.

• Do some admin.  Pay a few bills, make an appointment you’ve been putting off, update your calendar, reply to some emails.

• Tidy up. It’s OK if you don’t have time for a deep cleaning session. 10 minutes is plenty of time to do some light dusting, wipe off a surface or vacuum up some crumbs.

• Hunt and gather. Walk around your house with an empty clothes basket in hand. Put anything that is not in its proper home into the basket. Spend another 10 minutes today or tomorrow putting those things back where they belong.

• Make a Donation Box. Simply get a large cardboard box and label it ‘Donation Box.’ Walk around the house placing items that are in good condition, but you no longer use, inside the box. Next time you go out, take the box to your favourite charity.

• Slim down your closet.  Choose 5 things you no longer wear, or that you wear but don’t really like, and put them into a bag to donate to your favourite charity.

There!  You’ve invested 10 minutes, and really accomplished something!
